Matthew Denny

Australian Olympic Discus Champion

Growing up just outside of Toowoomba, in the town of Allora, Matthew Denny began his throwing career at a young age, experimenting with bean bags as shot puts and vortexes as javelins during his time in year 1 at school.

In his teenage years, Matty’s passion for throwing led him to construct a homemade discus circle at his family’s property. By 2013, his dedication bore fruit as he clinched the World Under 18 Youth Championships discus title. The following year, he achieved a commendable fourth-place finish at the 2014 Under 20 World Junior Championships and secured silver at the 2015 Summer Universiade.

In 2015, Matty made history by becoming only the second athlete in nearly a century to triumph in both the discus and hammer events at the 2016 Nationals. He represented Australia in the discus at the 2016 Rio Summer Olympics, where, at just 20 years old, he was the youngest competitor in the field.

His personal best in the discus stands at 67.02 meters, a mark he set at the Tokyo Olympics.

In 2022, Matty showcased his prowess once again at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, clinching the gold medal in the Men’s Discus Throw event, further solidifying his status as a top-tier athlete in his field.

Jane Claxton

Australian Field Hockey Player

After bursting onto the national hockey scene in 2013, Jane-Anne ‘Jane’ Claxton made her Olympic debut at Rio 2016 in the midfield for the Hockeyroos.

Jane won gold at the 2013 Australian Youth Olympic Festival with a 2-1 victory over China. The same year she was crowned the South Australian Sports Institute Junior Female Athlete of the Year.

She secured herself as a regular in the Australian side in 2013 when she helped win gold at the Oceania Cup and the World League Semi-Final, as well as silver in with World League Final. In 2014 Jane helped Australia claim gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and silver at the Netherlands World Cup.

2015 was a huge year for the midfielder, being selected in all major international tournaments that year.

The Adelaide-born athlete credits her father Bob, a Hockey Australia life member, and her brother for her entry into hockey. At the age of six, she began playing in a mixed-gender competition, and although the rough and tumble of playing with the boys nearly put her off, she has never looked back.

Juliana Valencia

National Women’s Wrestler Freestyle Champion (Under 50kg)

Growing up in Colombia, sport was one of the best avenues young people could take. Juliana Valencia Velez began training in Judo at age 13 where she competed regularly in competitions around the country.

At 16 she moved to Australia to be with her dad in Blacktown NSW. Quite far from everything in Blacktown, being in a new country and not speaking the language, finding a place to train was very important, and her first way to start to settle in Australia.

It was at this time that Juliana decided to make the transition to wrestling, loving it since day 1.

Juliana travels all over Sydney, from Bondi to Penrith and everywhere in between, just to get practices in.

Despite these challenges, she is the current national champion under 50kg WW. She has also trained and competed in many countries across Asia, Europe, and North America.

Most recently at the Olympic qualifiers in Egypt, she won her first match, but lost in the quarterfinals unfortunately losing her opportunity to wrestle at the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Now back in Australia and training, she looks forward to more competitions and the next Olympic trials in 2028, helping build the sport for women and all Australian wrestlers.

Jack Howell

Australian Para Triathlon Champion

A lover of all sports from a young age, Jack Howell was born prematurely in Canberra at 33 weeks with a condition known as Symbrachydactyly. Resulting in a congenital amputation of the left hand, also affecting the arm length and motion.

A competitive swimmer, cross-country runner, and triathlete throughout School Sport Victoria and National competition, Jack won many medals across a range of sports including Gold in the 50m Breaststroke at the 2021 National Swimming Championships.

In 2017 Jack started racing triathlons at age 13. With no disability category for junior triathletes, Jack raced in his age group against able-body competitors. During this time Jack won numerous state and national medals and was the first para-athlete to be selected for the able-body School Sport Victoria triathlon team (twice).

In 2022, aged 18, Jack was classified in the PTS5 category for Para triathlon allowing him to compete internationally in the elite men’s open age. In just 18 months of international racing, Jack won nine medals for Australia and is currently ranked 4th in the World Triathlon Para PTS5 rankings. At 20 years of age, Jack is the youngest PTS5 international competitor in the world rankings.

Jack is aiming to compete at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games, the 2028 LA Paralympic Games, and the 2032 Brisbane Paralympic Games. He currently holds the National Para Triathlon and Oceania Para Triathlon Championship titles, is a Lindsay Gaze Awardee, a Sport Australia Hall of Fame scholarship holder, an Olympic Changemaker awardee, and a speaker for corporate and school’s programs.
